How To Use This Site

Both graphic and text versions of this site have been created to allow the site to be more easily accessed by people who are blind, vision impaired and sighted.

The heading at the top of each page on the graphics site is immediately followed by a link to the text site. The link on each page of the text site goes to the graphic site. Both versions of the site use the same source data - ie. the content of the parallel sites is in synch. The graphics version merely contains images which illustrate the information already contained in the text.

The footer at the bottom of each page contains links to all of the main sections of the site. These are duplicated by the static navigation bar at the side of the screen on the graphics site. Keyboard shortcuts have been defined for the links in the footer. These are activated (on Windows systems) by pressing the ALT key and the listed letter. This will jump to the link. To follow the link just press ENTER. The TAB key will also allow you to step through all of the links on a screen. The shortcuts are as follows :

The text version of the site is recommended for the vision impaired as it is styled with large text on a plain background with high contrast colours.

Tips for Students

To print any of the animations on this site you will need to do the following :

  1. When the animation shows what you want to print (eg. the outside view of the eye) press the PRINT SCREEN button on your keyboard. This pastes an image showing the full contents of the screen to the clipboard.
  2. Go into an image editing tool like Microsoft Photo Editor or Paintshop Pro.
  3. Click the New Image icon to create a blank 'canvas' 800 x 600 pixels.
  4. Press CTRL-V to paste the clipboard contents onto the 'canvas'.
  5. Use the cropping function of your image editor to remove the parts of the picture that you don't need.
  6. Save the end result in JPG format.
  7. When you are in Word or any other application you will then be able to insert the picture from the directory you saved it into.

The sections under Resources for

have been coded so that when they are printed page-breaks will occur so as not to print illustrations across two pages - provided your browser supports this functionality (IE4.0 and above). For printing we recommend a font size of medium or smaller.
